The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop was released in September 2020. Compared to its predecessor (XPS 12), this laptop displays better performance and features a lightweight design.

This Dell laptop includes a USB Type-A port, USB Type-C dongle, and power adapter. However, it lacks a stylus pen even though it supports pen input.

XPS 13 is powered by a 15-watt Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and Intel Iris Xe graphics. So processing power-wise, it can handle basic creative tasks but might struggle with hardcore video editing or gaming.

In terms of graphics, many use XPS 13 2-in-1 to play games like Fornite. But it might fall short of your expectation when you play PC games with demanding graphics such as AAA games.

For better gaming performance, you may want to consider the other competing laptops, such as ASUS ZenBook Flip S or HP Spectre x360 15T.

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 Laptop Features & Benefits

Design

Compared to the previous model, Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is more eye-catching and pleasing. This model is made of precision aluminum milled for extra rigidity and sturdiness, and it is now available in platinum silver color.

The palm rest is genuine carbon fiber, making it more lightweight. But most importantly, it feels smooth and velvety to your palm.

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is sleeker and slimmer. It is around 7-13mm thick, making it convenient to carry. The only thing is, the size cannot accommodate USB A ports. You’ll need an adapter if you want to connect external monitors. The good thing is, a dongle is included in the package.

Performance

As we mentioned, Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop runs on Intel Core processor with integrated graphics. The base model has a 15-watt i5 Intel Core processor, while the high-end has an i7.

Some get disappointed that Dell’s update on the processor sacrificed the performance in exchange for a quieter device. But for us, it's not that bad.

XPS 13 has a class-leading performance when running multiple tasks at a time. Tackling creative jobs and switching to multiple tabs or programs won't affect the speed. There’s no lag even after a standby mode.

The benchmark tests show it's more limited, 920 score than the other competing laptops. So it might not be a good choice for intensive tasks or games. But if you mainly do regular computer or office work, then Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is ideal for you.

Display and Graphics

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop has a 13-inch display with a super narrow infinity edge, but Dell retained the IR camera that the other laptops omitted. This model has a Dell Cinemacolor option and is upgradable to a 4K resolution.

It features a 16:10 ratio, which is excellent for multitasking since it allows you to work side by side. Depending on the version, the brightness ranges between 450 - 500 nits.

You won't have to worry about a dim screen when you're outside because it has an anti-reflective function.

The vertical pixels make such a difference in terms of graphics. The images are sharp and the details are incredible. If you're concerned about battery life, go to ultra settings for a lower-resolution display.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 has Iris XE integrated graphics, which is impressive, but it may suffer from graphically demanding PC games, such as Fire Strike.

Keyboard

The keyboard has a tactile feel and is magnetic. Because it is backlit, typing in the dark is not a problem. The travel speed is 0.7mm, which is not exceptionally fast. It's neither too slow nor too quick.

Although having a backlit keyboard is convenient, it is restricted. Other users have expressed their disappointment with the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1's shallow keyboard. Honestly, it feels hard on the fingertips.

Aside from the shallow keyboard, we dislike the tight page up and down keys! With the up and down arrows, they were placed so close together.

When scrolling across a page using the keyboard, you are more likely to strike the former than the latter. Use the touchpad or touch screen as an alternative.

Ports

Only two USB-C ports are available on the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop. Fortunately, they are Thunderbolt 3 ready. HD external monitors are supported.

It also has a microSD card reader and a headphone port for a wired headset. Because other excellent hybrid laptops lack USB C connectors, the MicroSD slot might compensate for the lack of USB C ports.

Battery Life

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is Intel Evo certified. This implies it meets the minimum hardware performance requirements, including more than 9 hours of battery life.

Using the same test, the battery life of this 2-in-1 laptop shows to be more than enough. It may last up to 17 hours if used regularly. This allows you to take a break from being close to a power outlet.

However, when we put it to the test, it only lasted around 8 hours with mixed-use. Gaming, streaming movies, and other basic tasks are included. Watching movies can cut the battery life by half because of the Intel XE graphics card.

Overall, the battery is more impressive than the other rival laptops such as Zenbook Flip, which boasts a maximum of 10 hours battery life.

Laptop-Tablet mode

It's easier to switch from laptop to tablet mode with a 360-degree hinge. You may rotate it till there's no more gap between the keyboard and the monitor. There's no need to worry about pressing the keyboard when it's hidden behind the monitor; it's disabled.

If you are in tent mode, you have the assurance that it will stay steady. The hinges are stiff, so they stay in place.

Camera

Dell did a great job not omitting the camera and still delivering thin edges for immersion on the XPS 13 2-in-1. Because most meetings are now held remotely, laptop webcams are essential.

You receive clear images when you use a 720p camera for Zoom or Skype meetings. The dual mic setup also works well. Those on the conference call will clearly hear you.

The only drawback is that it does not have a privacy shield for covering the camera. However, the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 contains a small sensor that flickers when an application uses it. If privacy is an issue, users can purchase camera sensors.

Security Features / Login

The security features of the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop are enhanced. The basic pin and password option is still available. However, the power button on the keyboard has a fingerprint reader embedded in it.

It also supports Windows Hello sign-in. This facial recognition feature is helpful for many people since it allows you to access your laptop almost instantly.

Audio

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop is known for its cinema sound, which refers to the fancy audio engineering designed for a wide soundstage and clarity.

Many complain about the non-blazing stereo speakers. But the sound firing under the table rather than toward you is intentional for the cinema sound.

In general, the audio can still be heard even when watching breaking news, helpful tips, or best tech tutorials in a loud place.

Connectivity

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 has a strong connection with a Killer Wi-Fi 6. You get a greater channel width and more efficient bandwidth sharing.

Sadly, XPS 13 2-in-1 is not LTE broadband supported. It relies on a wi-fi connection to access the Internet. Hopefully, Dell offers or considers this in the next version.

XPS 13 2-in-1 is among the best Windows laptops, such as Zenbook Flip, HP Spectre X360, and HP Elite Dragonfly, highly recommended by the leading digital publisher and international media group.

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1: Social Proof

We have also checked other Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 reviews from other customers to see how it is getting on. Here are some of them:

"Love this computer! Highly recommend it! Love the way it types and love the aesthetic of it too. I guess the only downside to this laptop would be the ports and the arrow keys (in my opinion), but neither of those things really matter to me.

I'll be purchasing a docking station anyway, and I just bought the Logitech Mx Master 3 (mouse), so I don't see me really needing to use the arrow keys.

This setup is purely for work only. I don't and probably won't see myself gaming on this laptop, but I've heard it has good graphics. If you want a reliable work laptop, you can bring on the get-go this and the Logitech Mx Master 3. You won't be disappointed!" -Aaron

"I think this laptop is probably the best looking and most premium feeling laptop on the market. However, I found the keyboard to be very bad.

There is hardly any key travel. I owned a previous 2-1 XPS for 3 years, and I am not sure why Dell decided to remove the previous keyboard.

I also found the trackpad to be a little less reliable. Unfortunately, despite improving the design in so many areas, the setback in the keyboard and trackpad forced me to return it."-Roger

"Overall, I am very happy with my Dell XPS 13. The trackpad and touchscreen have excellent sensitivity. The webcam and keyboard are much higher quality than my previous laptop (admittedly, a cheaper Lenovo Ideapad). The screen resolution and color reproduction, while not world-beating, are more than adequate for all but artists and graphic designers.

Having 16 GB of RAM has made a huge difference in running multiple browser tabs. As a middle school teacher working remotely, I need at least 20 tabs running simultaneously to teach online classes, several with videos queued up. Gone are the awkward delays and freeze-ups that would sometimes plague my previous 8 GB machine." -Zabed

Conclusion

Our in-depth reviews suggest that the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop is not a waste of money but more than worth it. It's a sleek portable device that can handle multiple apps without compromising quality or speed.

When the tech company I worked for restructured and I ended up jobless, I decided to put the wealth of knowledge and management skills to use somewhere new. I’d checked out a few buyer’s guides on the site in the past and reached out to the previous owner. A few months later, here we are. Now, I get to be behind the scenes, helping people find the best tech.
